To write any IELTS writing Task 2 essay introduction, start by rephrasing the topic statement — don’t waste time straying from it. Also, briefly answer the question(s), or (if asked) clearly but briefly indicate the extent to which you agree with the statement.

The following steps illustrate how to write an introduction for the above example:

Step 1 – paraphrase the topic sentence(s)

Most of us spend a great deal of time working for a living. Therefore, it makes sense that we find satisfaction in our work to ensure a sense of personal wellbeing.

Step 2 – answer the first question in one sentence

Several aspects of the job may contribute to the satisfaction derived from it, including perceived competence, and a sense of purpose to one’s work.

Step 3 – answer the second question in one sentence

Yet, the circumstances of the individual will determine whether or not this idealistic situation can be achieved.

Do not elaborate on any of these points (the topic statement or answers to the two questions) when writing your introduction. Leave this to the body of your essay.
