Do you apply the job or apply for the job?

Correct expression: Apply for the job

The word ‘apply’ has the following two main meanings:

  1. “apply” + object = put on / use  …E.g. Apply sunscreen (to your skin)
  2. “apply for/to” + object = request  …E.g. Apply for job

Note: “Apply sunscreen” sounds a little too formal for casual spoken situations.  It is more common to say “put (some) sunscreen on”.

A third usage of ‘apply’ is the idiomatic expression to apply oneself, which means to work hard at something (such as studies).

IELTS is no walk in the park, but with the right teacher and by applying yourself, you will improve your score.
